This is a fast growing ground covering plant but could become invasive if not kept under control. It spreads by putting out runners. The glossy leaves are oval in shape with some varieties being a mid green, but others ranging to a dark green with purple markings. The flowers grow on short spikes. ‘Black Scallop’ has scalloped-edged dark red, almost black, foliage, and spikes of blue flowers in early Summer. The dark colour of the leaves is intensified in full sun.
