The genus Ilex, commonly called holly, can be found throughout the world in both temperate and subtropical regions. It includes species of trees, shrubs, and climbers, with evergreen or deciduous foliage and inconspicuous flowers. They are slow-growing plants which can grow to 25m tall. The type species is the European holly Ilex aquifolium. Ilex cornuta is in flower in spring, and the seeds ripen from late autumn. The flowers are dioecious and only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required.
