Fraxinus is a genus which contains 45–65 species of usually medium to large trees, mostly deciduous. Commonly called Ash trees, they are widespread across much of Europe, Asia and North America. These fast-growing trees are grown for timber and firewood because of their dense wood and short time to maturity. They also make excellent ornamental specimens and street trees in sunny areas with moist, well-drained soil. The Claret Ash tree grows to around 15–20m tall and has dark green leaves that turn to a dark claret red in the autumn.
